G84 – Tapping Cycle (Turning)

G84 Tapping Syntax

G84 Z-15.0 R1.0 F1.5;

Z: Final depth of the tap
R: Retract height
F: Thread pitch (same as feedrate per revolution)

Cycle Working

G84 is used to perform tapping operations. The machine synchronizes the spindle and feedrate (feed per revolution) to cut threads using a tap. The tap enters to the depth defined by Z, and then reverses out. Suitable for rigid tapping with spindle reversal.

Example Program

T0606 ;
G97 S100 M03;
G00 X0 Z2.0;
G84 Z-15.0 R1.0 F1.5;
G00 X100. Z100. M09;
M30;

Visual Representation

G84 Tapping Cycle Representation
🔹 Use exact pitch as feedrate (F value)
🔸 Ensure spindle can reverse (for rigid tapping)
🔹 Not used in old turning machines without spindle sync
🔸 Use coolant and correct tap for material type
